Summary Description:

The Paper Machine Shift Supervisor is responsible for shift supervision and leadership for the Q41 Paper Machine’s stock preparation, coating preparation, paper machine, rereeler, supercalenders, and winders.  This includes scheduling and managing the crew work and training schedules.  The shift manager participates in entry level hiring as well as crew promotion processes.  The shift manager manages safety, quality and productivity through the machine line.  This position also responds to critical situations in other areas of the mill as required.

 

 

Key Accountabilities:

  • Safety & Environmental – Provide leadership and resources to ensure employee safety and compliance with safety policies & environmental regulations.  Lead by example through actions.  Provide framework for and set expectations around crew/team led safety plans.
  • Quality – Provide leadership and resources to ensure product quality.  Work with area managers and resource groups to implement plans to centerline and reduce variability of operation.
  • Cost – Manage at a crew level to implement initiatives that sustain Q41’s position as a North American low-cost producer of graphic papers.
    New product development – coordinate crew activity to support Billerud’s evolution North American packaging grades.
    Manufacturing Excellence and Reliability – Provide leadership and resources to improve equipment reliability through use of systems including Operator Driven Rounds and Manufacturing Work Systems. 
  • Engagement – Lead the building of effective work teams.  Provide formal and informal feedback to develop team members.  Increase skill level of employees through effective training.  Help crew to understand and implement change.  Utilize systems to help team solve problems.
    Coordinate resources to address daily workload and maximize the productivity of Q41 / PS&D.

Required Experience and Education 

Must Have:

  • Fully certified Q41 JF1A or JF1C OR Bacheleor’s degree in engineering, chemistry, or technical equivalent OR manufacturing supervisory experience
  • Minimum 2 years of professional manufacturing experience

 

Preferred Skills:

  • Supervisory / leadership experience
  • Ability to advance into production supervisory roles
  • Knowledge of paper machine systems including process flows, terminology, paper properties, and analytical tests that measure system performance.
  • Proficiency in the following systems
    • Manufacturing Work Systems
    • SAP (work order entry)
    • Optivision
    • Proficy
    • ParcView
    • SAP
    • When Down Do
    • Ceridian
    • Global People Tool
