Postdoc in non-intrusive techniques for respiratory and voice disorders

Publicerad 2021-05-04

KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm has grown to become one of Europe’s leading technical and engineering universities, as well as a key centre of intellectual talent and innovation. We are Sweden’s largest technical research and learning institution and home to students, researchers and faculty from around the world. Our research and education covers a wide area including natural sciences and all branches of engineering, as well as architecture, industrial management, urban planning, history and philosophy.

Job description

As part of a cross-department initiative, the department of Engineering Mechanics announces a postdoc position within the thematic area Biomechanics, Health and Biotechnology, on the topic of non-intrusive assessment techniques for respiratory and voice disorders.

We are looking for a postdoctoral researcher in the field of turbulent flow and fluid-structure interaction modeling in both engineering and biological contexts, with a multi-physical and multi-scale view. The group has personnel with a wide range of backgrounds and expertise, including turbulence modeling, biofluid dynamics, aeroacoustics, and applied mathematics.

The purpose of this project is to create a hybrid data- and model-driven method for the non-intrusive assessment of obstructive airway disorders and voice. Due to the multifactorial complexity of airway conditions and voice disorders, there is a limited knowledge on relevant physics associated with the relationships between the intermittent fluid flow, the upper respiratory tract, and the generated sound. This research project involves high-fidelity simulations in both idealized configurations (e.g., Starling Resistor) and subject-specific geometries; and deep-learning algorithms for error assessment and generating a model with improved prediction accuracy.

The project will enable more robust, patient-specific, non-intrusive assessment methods, by training neural networks with imaging data (e.g., MRI) and accurate fluid flow and wall dynamics data pertinent to the fluid flow interacting with the upper airway structure, and by combining such networks with recorded sound pressure data. With this type of modeling, doctors will be able to simulate and analyze treatment options a-priori. This methodology can be applied in areas such as diagnostics and treatment of respiratory disorders, as well as speech and voice disorders.

This position is one of eight postdoc positions in the thematic areas: Biomechanics, Health and Biotechnology, Advanced Material and Structures, Energy, Transport and Future Mobility, Advanced Computing and Machine Learning.
